Reese Fresh, Chilly-O sponsored, photos in RIDEbmx and flow from Sunday Bikes; visited Atlanta, GA for a brief moment. The rain couldn’t stop Reese Fresh from filming a quick edit. Even though he couldn’t get to all the spots he wanted, he had a blast in the Dirty South. Check out this short edit of the ATL terrain.

Can you say Stoked! Well, folks it is that time again! Our favorite BMX magazine releases the new issue just in time for Spring. If the weather kept you in this winter now is the time to do an overhaul on your bike and get to shreddin’! This issue we featured guest rider Matt LeVeige in our ad with his unorthodox riding style, who prides himself on stepping out of what’s popular. Thanks again Matt!

Interview: Matt “The Sez” Leviege

What’s your name?

“The Sez” LeViege

Where are you from?

New Jersey, but I now live in Atlanta, GA.

What’s the scene like there?

Way too cliquish for my liking, but with the right tunes and a coffee I find street riding solo the best. Atlanta has spots for days!

Why do you think Atlanta has invested in so many skate parks, seems like a lot for one city?

LOL, I think the Mayor has kids! I don’t know, but they keep putting them up but I’ll still be riding street, Son!

How long have you been riding?

About 10 years now!

How do you overcome fear, like do you have any special mental abilities or rituals?

No… I only do what I see myself doing. I’ve learned that if your not feeling it at the time, it’s better to just walk away before you can’t! However, if I feel it… I just come back and try it.

Why did you choose to rep a street culture/urban/lifestyle brand like Chilly-O Clothing?

The style just seems like my own, that new creative $h!t! I’m going to always rep what just feels right.

How would you rate your craziness on a scale of 1 to 10?

To some people it’s a 10, and to others it’s a 1. It just depends what style you like… For example, I don’t think a flatlander would look at a dirt jumper as being crazy, but I do what I do and just HAVE FUN!

What’s your favorite color animal and body of water?

Color would be Red, Animal would be Wolf and body of water? Dude, after that I lost her number…

What does the concept of old school and new school mean to you? Tuck no-handers and nac-nacs are the coolest things going but old school is hugely criticized.

I like raw old school mixed with new, but being in the game for this long I think everyone has something to say about everything! LOL, it’s all just tricks on a bike, just be creative and have fun! I personally don’t do the newest tricks just because everyone is doing them! I like the ones people don’t do.

I noticed hop music is becoming the music of choice with riders. Why is traditional BMX sound in video edits (i.e. punk, metal, rock) not so prevalent anymore, what happened?

I don’t know? I hate that screamo music but like chill, hip-hop. I even like metal when I’m lounging at the spot and I’ll rock to blues, hardcore rap or jazz.

Skaters are known for impeccable taste in fashion and their fashion sense is often borrowed on many fashion levels, why don’t BMXer get that kind of respect?

Probably because most BMXers are just metal heads and not into fashion, LOL. I don’t know…

Seriously, skater fashion is documented on high levels of media, I personally feel like there is more street culture design in BMX and Skate. The oversized prints on tees came from street wear back in the day. The skinny jean phenol stemmed from punk and the indie rock scene kind of pushed that. Seems like BMX doesn’t have a noticeable fashion style at times. Why do you think?

Well, I’m no skater so I guess they do what they wanna do. However, being a BMXer and an individual, I think extreme sports in general are made up of so many different backgrounds. For me to say fashion is a one man team, that would be unjust. I think it’s just to say that everyone rocks there own $h!t. For example, in BMX take Sean Berns vs. Nigel Sylvester, both have individual expression.

Skinny jeans I would definitely say stemmed from punk and metal and during 60’s Punk and the Big 80’s craze recently; the kids ,like the tricks, brought it back, look becomes a skater look.

With this one, I think the youth is fixed on a more 80’s look now and all extreme sports spearhead that. LOL, fashion is known to fluctuate, but keep on digging in the fashion world and you might see Cross Colors and Fila! Personally, when I ride, I like tighter fitting clothing because it doesn’t get caught in the chain or handle bars. My style is freer, but when you catch me off of my bike, I’m rocking’ baggy jeans and Chilly-O gear!

What new direction do you want to take your riding style if there is any at all?
What is your fixation on _____________?

Well… I love street, but lately I want to focus more on park and trail style. I think that will open up my riding style. Fixation… maybe pegless.

Why should the world care about Matt Leviege?
Because I keep taking all the hot girls and my 20 inch rims are better then yours and basically The Sez’ says so!

Heroes in the sport?
Rob Wise, Sergio Layos, Cory Martinez, Ruben and the man who made a Schwinn Sting Ray

What country would you like to ride in outside of the states?

Well I’m Creole, so I want to visit France, then Barcelona, Spain.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

I was wearing a mask on this side, LOL.

Anything you want to say to you new fans ?

Keep $h!t real, enjoy life and all the little things. Whatever you do, be creative and unique. Do everything with a smile and live every moment and do your dreams!

Interview: Jimmy Smokin’ Greene

Jimmy Greene aka Jimmy “Smokin” Greene

Wow, you must run fast with a name like Smoking?
I mean, I can run pretty fast if I need to.

I was being sarcastic, how did you get the name Jimmy “Smokin’” Greene?
Chilly-O gave it to me, for what reason I have no idea….ha-ha!

I guess I will speak on that. Perhaps, I thought maybe you can burn the brakes of anything moving, you look fast…”wink.” Where are you from?

What’s the scene like there?
It’s pretty good here. Lots of good riders here that never get noticed, but I hope that will change soon. For the most part, there are really good skate parks everywhere …Thank God!

Why do you think Atlanta has invested in so many skate parks, seem like a lot for one city?
I would assume that Atlanta has money to invest, where many cities don’t. Maybe because in other places city officials hate on our kind (bikers or skaters)…hahahaha, Ya Dig
How long have you been riding?
Almost 6 years…it will be exactly 6 years on March 7, 2010.

How do you overcome fear, like do you have any special mental abilities or rituals?
If I think about doing a trick, I just look at what I’m going to hit, sort of like visualizing pulling off the trick. If I’m scared, I sit there, look at it and say… F@#k It!

Why did you choose to rep a street culture/urban/lifestyle brand like Chilly-O Clothing?
That’s what I’m about Chilly-O feels me! We are pretty much on the same page and plus he puts up with my craziness.

If you look at it, every trick is pretty much old school. Riders have been doing old-school tricks since forever. The younger guys are bringing them back and we are doing them way better with more style.

Rap or hip-hop is way better to me personally… that’s all I got to say! Maybe it goes hand and hand with the grittiness of street riding.

People like to credit the skater look to skaters, but really it’s our look(BMX)… people tell me all the time, “You look like a skater” and I correct them extremely real fast. BMX also have more cost involved so maybe kids who ride skateboards can afford extra clothes.

Skinny jeans came from bikers Bro… cause that chain (bike) is ruthless. I mean think about it, skating is a big sport now, bigger than ever. BMX doesn’t get that much attention. Boards cost less, so there are more skaters involved that can get exposed. Some parents will invest in BMX if they really think their kids are into the sport, but how often is that compared to buying a skateboard. That is how BMX style gets overlooked.

Barspins, barspins, barspins….I want to be that guy that everybody is like dang, “He threw that bar, he had no time” …I like doing things fast and linking.

What is your fixation on barspins?
I love them I don’t know why, but they are so fun and my favorite trick by far.
Why should the world care about Jimmy Smokin’ Greene?
I’m different then any other guys out there… everybody around me picks up on that very fast. I will rep Chilly-O Clothing to the end. Also, I love to ride my little kids bike, that’s the way it’s supposed to be. The Love comes first.

Take it off me and put it on you. Why should the world of BMX give a damn about Jimmy Greene, there are tons of kids who can do tricks?
O, I really put my heart and soul into this sport not wanting to do anything with it but just to have fun. I’m really good now, and I think BMX is still fun no matter how good I am, how bad I suck or what I achieve. I love BMX and that’s all that should matter. Simple.

Heroes in the sport?
Chase Dehart, Devon Smillie, Mike Aikten, and the list could go on and on. There are many great riders in the sport.
What country would you like to ride in outside of the states?
England.
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to my babies on the other side, duh!
