Atlanta has been rapidly evolving from a medium sized, southern gateway to a booming metropolis. The residuals that come along with this rapid growth is an investment into the arts and street art. ABV Gallery, curated by Greg Mike and company, has been setting the tone for very cool receptions relating to pop art, comic art, journalistic photography and more is to come. I found myself intrigued with Oliver Black’s upcoming reception after viewing his short film on his processes and felt overwhelmingly motivated. Oliver Black will be hailing from the artist-concentrated city of San Francisco to introduce his vision to the young, hip, risk takers who frequent the ABV Gallery located conveniently in Auburn Avenue Historic District within Studioplex Art Community.

Time and time again as I get on my tangent about street wear, urban wear, whatever you wanna call it as it relates to the exclusion that has been rapidly running a muck. I’m here today to say, listen juudgemental cool guy, if Bun B is coming to your store to autograph hundreds of your customers shoes and garb, one must realize that there is an urban root or connection somewhere that you can not exclude. We are proud of what Chris Jibbs has built in the name of inclusion and the bigger picture, diversity. Please listen to his vision as he inspires and lights up the room in Union LA.

Urban Renewal? The urbanwear market has experienced major changes. So what does today’s so-called ‘Urban’ customer look like? And how has he or she evolved from the urban shopper of ten years ago? We asked five business experts.

“[He is] The Experimenter, The Status-Seeker and The Barrier-Breaker. “Skateboarding is the new basketball.” Urban shoppers once again drive sales and new market trade, just as the did ten years ago. Sensibilities have matriculated upward, even into high street and contemporary style. The difference is, the urban shopper’s silhouette has evolved from a uniformed, predictable expression to a more multi-faceted and unpredictable one because of status seeking, information dissemination and individuality stamping. Meanwhile, the “Type A” urban consumer is having fun, hanging, creating transgressed-style all while embracing diversity and “maverickdom.” A new genesis is happening now and is especially powerful because of parallel multiculturalism. Alternative hip-hop music forms (i.e. House, Dub-Step and Electronica) will have a big impact. The positive acceptance of minorities in action sports will create intrigue and new ideals. The demise of middle class America also has an impact, retailers will continue to price high or low, no middle ground.

So I was working on new t-shirt design and I get a text from Destiney, a member of the AUC Fashion Club, about a fundraiser for Haiti they are doing in a local art gallery. I was astonished that the group took a proactive stance to make a difference. I would have guessed that refund checks have been issued and there may have been an exodus to the nearest mall, but they said, “No! We must do something.” This is the stuff you never hear about, so take a look the bright young faceswho selflessly thought outside of themselves to create avenues to raise money for Food and Medicine for the people of Haiti.

What direction is Hip-Hop going?

I feel like hip-hop is going more into real hip-hop, how it was back in the 90’s. It’s like 90’s hip-hop mixed with 2010 hipster. It’s like a new era!

What cultural aspect do you think is missing from Hip-Hop?

…more real artist gettin’ their shine. There is a limited amount of actual artist who cherish their craft regardless of how much money they make… So many dope artist are getting slept on. SMH

How do you come up with content for analogies and punch lines?

Basically, everything I write is my life and what I know. I try to relate things together and create my own unique play on words.

Where will Hip-Hop be in 5 Years?

Back to where it needs to be if all these dope artist keep arriving on the scene. I’m really rockin’ with the 2009 and 2010 XXL Freshman Class and that direction fa’ real!

Groupie or Girlfriend?

Both… LOL, JK!!! Nahhh… I have a misses… my Lil special someone.!!

iTunes or Road Shows?

Both!

iTunes to get them familiar with the music and road shows to let them rock with the music live and in effect. Which inturn, is success for me as an artist.

Any upcoming collaborations?

I just did a track with another up coming artist in this freshman class; Nefu Da Don. He’s definitely holdin’ it down on www.worldstarhiphop.com right now. We collabed on a track for my upcoming project, Rosaries On The Dresser.


What trend in fashion can you do without?

The gimmicky fashion and un-authentic clothing. I’m into clothing lines who relate to their clothing with culture. It’s way doper and I would rather see alot more people in it.

Car or Motorcycle?

Car. I like bikes but they are not me. I’d rather be the cat leanin’ behind the tent.

Do you think it is prerequisite for artist to rap about car, clothes and girls?

No, because some artist may not be about that. I think that would make their music false and hard to take serious.

Does that format ever get old?

It does at times, but every now and then those type of tracks are needed.

Who would you like to work with?

I would like to do a song featuring Wale, Drake, Wiz Khalifa, J Cole, and Big Sean on it. I think that would be “hella” dope!

What do you think about the Hadron Collider?

I don’t know too much about it besides what I hear in the news, but from what I hear there is suppose to be a great epidemic for answering the fundamental questions of physics.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To elect Young Lyxx for president
